History: The neues kino was created in 1986 and installed in a workshop of the so-called “Stadtgärtnerei” area, a place which played an important role between 1986 and 1988 in the development and promotion of an alternative culture in Basel. After the police had put an end to the activities of the Stadtgärtnerei in 1988, the neues kino became an itinerant movie theater and organized screenings in different places within the city until Mai 1991, where it settled in its still current location, a former locksmithery workshop. Since then, the neues kino had been continuously improving its infrastructures to offer a high-quality program in a friendly and comfortable environment. In 1995, the police tried again to close our movie theater, arguing that it lacked an official authorization for its activities, but the city authorities rapidly regularized the situation, and the neues kino is, since then, an official theater in Basel._

Organisational structure: The neues kino is a Swiss “Verein”, a not-for-profit voluntary association. We hold bi-weekly meetings to plan and coordinate our activities.

Editorial Line: The neues kino aims at showing a wide variety of films, be they fiction, documentaries, or be they experimental works, which should raise important political issues, display innovative esthetical aspects, or treat themes of particular relevance for the region and the city. The programme is made monthly on a theme, or may take the form of a retrospective. It is important for us that our programme triggers reflections and discussions. During the summer (July/August) we go open-air, screening only 16mm films (the choice of which is quite limited, nowadays).

Regularity: One screening each Thursday and Friday. Once a month, we show a movie late on Saturday night (“Nocturnes”).

Other stuff:No.

Publicity: Brochure every two months
– People who have enrolled once for a one-year membership receive our monthly program by mail, year after year (even quite some time after last renewing their membership).
– Local media list us with the other cinemas.
– Opt-in e-mail newsletter which can be applied for on our website.

Audience: On average 20 persons. (In 2008, we had more than 3000 guests for more than 100 screenings.)

Funding: It is mainly financed through ticket sale, memberships and occasional renting of the theater for events where movies are shown (small festivals, birthdays, etc.). For larger acquisitions, we rely on donations from foundations or the state lottery, whenever we feel like going begging.
