History: The cinema was founded in 1990 as a part of an cultural centre on the edge of East Berlin. The place was before an official youth club, we took it over when the socialist state collapsed. There was no regular cinema in it before. We began with a couple of shows per week, later we played regularly every day.

Organisational structure: We work in the frame of a typical German association (“eingetragener Verein” – e.V.), together with a pub, a gallery and a theatre stage. Every section works independently.

Editorial Line: The program is a mixture of current so called “art house films”, classics, experimental and underground films. We bring also independent films with no official distribution company to start.

Regularity: Every day 1 to 3 screenings.

Other stuff: We have also an own archive, the collection “ex.oriente.lux”, which contains underground films made in East Germany between 1979 and 1989.

Publicity: If we start films with no official distribution, we try to get press reviews. But it’s getting more and more complicated. Beside this we do the whole spectrum: monthly programs, website and so on.

Audience: From film to film completely different. We have a little core of loyal audience, but that’s not enough.

Funding: We have to finance our program only by incoming money, but get support for printing of the monthly program.
