History: The Cube Cinema as a concept was developed by Club Rombus, a series of roving events programmed by a collective of guerilla style artists and film enthusiasts around the city of Bristol in the late 1990s. In 1998 the collective moved into a building with a rich history of cinema and theatre of various incarnations; a building that had housed the original Bristol Arts Centre in the 1960s. In this building the collective would operate under the name The Cube Cinema.
While much of that original arts centre has been developed into plush city housing, The Cube has fought the property market to maintain its presence in this central location. Over the last eleven years (including a one year closure due to fire damage) Cube has developed its programming content and audience to become a much loved and respected music / cinema / cabaret / social space that is open 7 nights a week throughout the year.

Organisational status: The Cube is a workers co-operative.
It is maintained by a core group of volunteers who oversee the daily and yearly operations of the venue. This core group coordinates the large volunteer force who staff the full range of tasks involved in programming and running an arts space. Both the core group and the wider volunteer force are permeable; people pass through various roles and responsibilities as is appropriate to their skills, desires and needs.
