History: SMART Project Space (SPS) was established in 1994 as a site for cross platform cultural practice. SPS has programmed over 97 independent cultural projects at home and abroad. SPS supports artists, filmmakers and musicians by providing contexts to define cultural production, and at the same time stimulates innovative relationships with new audiences. Housed in a former Pathological Anatomical Laboratory since 2005, SPS has set itself apart from other venues by developing different platforms of artistic production and creative research – from exhibition space, to cinema and concert hall; from artists’ studios to café/ restaurant – drawing together a wide range of approaches from the most interesting emergent international practitioners.
SPS posits the political nature of artistic and cultural activity, and is an institution that is part community facility, part laboratory, and part centre for academic inquiry.
SMART Cinema (SPS’s film and video department) opened its doors in October 2008.
Organisational structure: Stichting SMART Project Space adheres to Code of Cultural Governance, with a Supervisory Board (Raad van Toezicht) and a board of Directors.
Editorial Line: SMART Cinema (SPS film and video department) is specialized in the screening of quality independent titles that haven’t received theatrical distribution in The Netherlands.
Each month we present 4 to 7 new films, from international arthouse to experimental feature films and documentaries, offering an exclusive and ever-changing showcase of films.
Each title gets screened for a period ranging from two to four weeks.
SMART Cinema’s main focus is on the contemporary developments in cinema, with special attention given to the work of young emerging filmmakers and to feature length films or documentaries produced by visual artists or dealing with visual arts.
Regularity:Seven days a week in at least one of our two cinemas.
Other stuff: SPS organizes art exhibitions (every 6 weeks) and music programmes (once or twice a week).
Other activities (performances, symposia, book presentations etc.) take place on an irregular basis.
Publicity: A newspaper informing on all SPS activities is printed every month and distributed in Amsterdam.
Every week a digital newsletter is sent to our online subscribers.
SPS then promotes its activities through Facebook, Myspace and other online social networks.
Audience: The number of visitors for the films we screen is extremely fluctuating and ranges from very few visitors to 40-50 people per screening.
Funding: SPS is supported by: Mondriaan Foundation; Municipality Amsterdam; Bureau Broedplaatsen; Stichting DOEN; The Netherlands Film Fund; Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds; VSBfonds; Amsterdam Fund for the Arts. SPS also finances its programme by ticket sales for music, film and visual arts programmes, renting studios to artists and renting conference spaces to other cultural organisations.
